Short Stories about Gull Lake

“Aren’t we lucky” – Gull Lake, Brainerd Lakes Area, MN

I was sitting on the dock watching the kids swim one beautiful summer evening just before dusk. This was part of our bed-time routine. I smiled when my 8 year old son stood at the end of the dock and with his hands in the air said; “We are so lucky!”! …..Yes, we really are!

The Loon – Gull Lake, Brainerd Lakes Area, MN

This is a story that I wouldn’t believe had I not been there. The whole family was out on the boat on quiet Sunday night. Two of us were fishing, my daughter was playing with the minnows in the live well, and my son was doing homework. A loon popped up about 10’ from the boat. She hung out there for a long time just watching us. Someone had the idea to toss a minnow into the water to see what would happen. The loon saw the minnow, dove under the water, caught the minnow came up on the other side of the boat, tossed it into the air a few times before catching it and swallowing it! She repeated this show for us until there were only a few minnows left. Amazing!

Squaw Point – Gull Lake, Brainerd/Nisswa, MN

Squaw Point (renamed “Gull Point”) is one of the coolest spots on Gull Lake. The sand point extends out from land for about 100 yards. It’s about 20’ wide and drops to 50’ very quickly on either side. It’s always been a favorite place for tossing the football or anchoring down when entertaining visitors

An attempt to own Pike Bay – Gull Lake, Brainerd Lakes Ares, MN

We’ve lived in Pike Bay for more than 15 years. It’s a quiet bay that is somewhat sheltered when the wind is blowing or there is a lot of boat traffic. The kids become a bit annoyed when the bay fills up with water skiers and tubers seeking some protection from the elements. They claim it is “our bay” and people should need to ask permission to use “our bay”? (Good luck with that!)
